On June 26th 1949, the Berlin Airlift campaign began. US and British flights took off to drop food and supplies into Berlin after the Soviet Union blockaded all ground traffic into Western Berlin. As a result, the starving people of Western Berlin received much needed food and supplies that they were not receiving from their Soviet holders. By mid July, more then 2,500 tons of supplies were flown into West Berlin everyday. The Airlift operations continued all way till the end of September (9/30/1949) even though the Soviet Union ended their blockade in May after international pressure. More then 250,000 flights were recorded and over 2 million tons of supplies were delivered to Berlin.
Till this day, the Berlin Airlift is still considered the largest and most successful logistical campaigns of all time.
